Ryan T. Cragun
Ryan T. Cragun is a husband, father, and sociologist of religion. The focus of his scholarship is Mormonism and nonreligion. While he has published research on a variety of topics within these broader domains, he has also developed a keen interest in the intersection between religion and science. In part, this interest derives from his work on the nonreligious, many of whom turn to science as a source of guidance and insight after leaving religion.
He has explored the views of the nonreligious on science in several book chapters and journal articles. His expertise in this area has led to numerous invitations to review articles on religion and science and to contribute to various publications, including an article titled, “Science and Religion” for the International Encyclopedia of Social & Behavioral Sciences. His research has been published in a variety of academic journals, including: Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Sociology of Religion, Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, Journal of Religion and Health, and Science, Religion, and Culture. He’s the author or editor of numerous books, including: Organized Secularism in the U.S. (De Gruyter), The Basics: Nonreligion and Secularity (Bloomsbury Academic), and Global Mormonism: Prospects and Concerns for an International Religion in the Twenty-First Century (Palgrave Macmillan). When he’s not working, he’s spending time with his wife and son, hiking, or tinkering with computers.
Originally from Utah, he now lives in Florida and works at The University of Tampa.
